INFLUENCE OF ORGANIZATION RESTRUCTURING ON PERFORMANCE OF PUBLIC HOSPITALS IN NAIROBI COUNTY KENYA

Public hospitals are expected to operate with high levels of efficiency, equity, and responsiveness. However, the current reality in Nairobi County’s public hospitals deviates sharply from this ideal. Facilities such as Kenyatta National Hospital and Mama Lucy Hospital face overcrowding, resource shortages, and fragmented service delivery. The objective of the study was to ascertain the influence of organization restructuring on performance of public hospitals in Nairobi County Kenya. The theoretical foundation of the study on organization restructuring and performance of the public hospitals in Nairobi County, Kenya is the Kurt Lewin’s model. The study adopted a pragmatist research philosophy and employed a mixed-method convergent parallel design. The target population comprised of 7,197 staff and five directors drawn from Kenyatta National hospital, Mbagathi hospital, Pumwani Maternity hospital, Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital and Mathari National & Teaching Hospitals. The sample size was 384 respondents. Data collection was conducted using questionnaires and interviews. Descriptive data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 29 and tabulated suing frequencies, percentages. Results show that organization restructuring exhibits a positive correlation with hospital performance. Regression coefficient analysis shows organizational restructuring strongly influences public hospital performance. The study concluded that organizational restructuring had the strongest positive impact on public hospital performance in Nairobi County, optimizing technology adoption, operational processes, and management structures to enhance efficiency and align with institutional values. The study recommended that public hospitals in Nairobi County should adopt restructuring initiatives focused on process efficiency, technological integration, and streamlined management structures to enhance healthcare service delivery and operational performance.
