This study explored the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Anglican and Charismatic churches in Nairobi, Kenya, with the aim of identifying facts and misconceptions surrounding their understanding and practice. Using a qualitative research design and purposive sampling, data were collected from pastors and laity across five estates: Kawangware, Kayole, Mathare, Kileleshwa, and Kasarani. The findings revealed significant variations in comprehension of the spiritual gifts, with Charismatics emphasizing expressive gifts such as speaking in tongues, while Anglicans prioritized gifts like wisdom and discernment. Misapprehensions were linked to limited knowledge of the “denominational other,” leading to profiling and doctrinal tensions. The study further identified challenges in theological training, with some Charismatic pastors overperforming miracles, preaching conditional messages, and employing practices such as spiritualizing handkerchiefs, soil, and water—practices that, at times, distorted the image of Christianity. Overall, the research underscores the need for theological education, interdenominational dialogue, and responsible exercise of spiritual gifts to promote unity, correct misconceptions, and strengthen the collective witness of the church in a pluralistic society.
